EatEngland:Livewell Aims & information sources

Our  take on Livewell a balance of healthy and sustainable food choices

Aims:
  • Reduce greenhouse gas emissions (GHGEs)(carbon) 25% by 2020 (50% by 2027 & 70% or more by 2050)
  • Reduce the impact of food on finite water resources: water, land, biodiversity, oil,........
  • Move from unsustainable food choices towards sustainable ones that support global agriculture and biodiversity
  • Inclusively that we all eat healthily & affordably: reduce fat, salt, sugar & increase fibre intake

Background:
  • The food we grow & eat is responsible for around 20-30% of our carbon emissions: consuming many of our limited resources, land, water, oil to name a few
  • Population is growing
  • Brits eat 79kgs of meat each year (216g/day), Indians, Chinese & Africans much less
  • Forests are the planets lungs & we are chopping many down to grow more food
  • Westerners over eat & waste much food whilst many don’t have enough
  • It is all our responsibility: farmers, manufacturers, retailers, caterers, government & individuals
  • Food & drink is a major contributor to the UK economy (£=7%, Jobs=3.7million)

The limits: to meet our 2020 obligations
  • Carbon 5kgs; easily achieved by reducing meat & calories (carbon embedded up to the shop/caterers door)
  • Calories 2300;
  • Salt 6g;
  • Meat, cheese & butter 2portions 104g (half & half);
  • Fish 2 portion/week;
  • Fruit & veg portions 6-12, including spuds
  • Minimal processed food
  • Inclusion of broader environmental (e.g. water usage, land use, biodiversity) and ethical issues are outside the scope of this project but will be constantly considered
